Packaging and Marketing

Packaging and Marketing

The Functions of Packaging

There are many purposes of packaging and they can all be sumarised and memorised with 'I PICT PD' which you can translate to 'I PICKED PRODUCT DESIGN'.

  • 'P' - Protection - Pacakging protects the product/item while it is being transported
  • 'I' - Informing - Companies put a picture or a diagram on the side of their product packaging to inform customers what is inside the package. Some of the information on the packaging has to be included by law.
  • 'C' - Containing - Some types of packaging consist of lots little peices for example breakfast cereals. Flat-Packed products also include many individual components.
  • 'T' - Transportion - Manufacterers and designers must take into to consideration the shape of the packaging and how easily it can be transported and stored.
  • 'P' - Preservation - While packaging products especially foods designers have to think about preserving the food and prevent it from deterioration and bacteria.
  • 'D' - Display - Not only do designers have to take all this into consideration they have to also make it look good. Attractive packaging can help a customers locate the product easier or draw new customers in.
Types of Packaging

There are alot of different types of packaging and all suited to a certain type/catgory of product. I am goign to tell you about three different types of packaging; Blister packaging, Skin packaging and Security packaging.

Blister Packaging

Blister packaging is not very expensive and durable. Clear plastic blisters are used on carboard backboard  or inlay to allow the consumer or customer to examine the product. The blister cavity is vacuum-formed to fit the product.

Skin Packaging

Skin packaging involves sealing a product between a layer of heated plastic and a layer of adhesive coated paper. The plastic is trapped in a frame that travles between the oven and the vacuum area. once the plastic is secured and the frame lifted out of the way, the board is loaded into the vacuum machine and the product placed on the top of the paper. The oven heats the plastic for a pre-set time, the frame lowers and the vacuum is activated, pulling the plastic down over the product against the paper. The hot plastic melts the adhesive, and the paper and the plastic are bonded together.

Security Packaging

Security packaging is made to stop theft and make the product secure, they do this with plenty of variations; security seals, clamshell packaging, induction sealing and holographic stickers.

Product Marketing - The Power of Branding

Brand development means creating a potentially valuale asset for a company. When creating a brand there is alot that is involved; Using a name, Term, Colour, A symbol/logo, Design. Doing all this can help ones brand stand and for many customers to recognize over others. Brands often humanise products and give ot a personality of its own. The power of branding is so strong that we often buy a product because of the way: it has been advertised or because you generally like the brand, Or you like the look of the company logo, the way it has been packaged and the website promotion.

Evaluation

Evaluation

All in all i feel that the project has pretty well
and the reason for why i think is because of some of the projects within the project i have done quite well. The projects that i fell i have done pretty well are; The history of the company and their logo, the poster to advetise the logo, the scanned in images and the research task on global sustainibility. There are also some projects that i feel i could improve and do a bit better, the tasks that i feel i could have done better in is; The logo redesign, the logo redesigning stages, and the two pages of research for the printing research. The reason why i felt the logo redesign could of gone better is because the logo was a bit too busy and could of been designed better. The reason why i felt that the logo redesigning stages could of gone better is because there was not alot of information about what i was actually doing with the logo. The reason also why i think that the two pages of research about printing techniques could of gone better is because i should of written it in a post instead of saving the powerpoint as a 'jpeg'.
On the plus side the reason that i felt i did well in the history of the company and logo is because i found improtant information and picked out the best bits. The reason i felt the poster went well is because the design of the poster i felt was good. Also the reason why i felt the scanned in images went well because it was successful and looked good. Finally i felt that the research task for global sustainibility went well because i targeted the information and put it on the post.

Global responsibility

Global Responsibility

Non-renewable resources
Designers and big manufacturers have used a wide range of non-renewable resources. This means that the materials that the designers and the manufacturers us like gases, oils, ores and minerals will eventually run out. These resources are natural resources and they have been produced over thousands of years and are very finite resources. Using these resources to make things and the disposal of these resources have a negataive effect on the globe.

Renewable sources
If we want to make our natural resources to last longer we have to try to use alot me renewable resources unlike alot of non-renewable resources. If we do this it could really help the global enviroment and help supply products. These products consist of: timber (and many timber products have the FSC logo which is the Forest stewardship council). The Fsc logo ensures that the source of that timber comes from a renewable source in a managed forest.

The Six 'R's In Global Responsibility
In recycling there are the main six 'R's that follow the rules of reycling and they are:
  • Reduce - this is where we reduce the amount of raw materials that we use and this will improve the sustainability. Alot of manufacters and designers are starting to reduce the amount of the raw materials they use.
  • Refuse - people, designers and manufacterers should try to refuse more packaging and only accept the amount you need to package your item or product.
  • Re-Use - by re-using your products or packaging e.g. plastic bags we can dramatically decrease the impact of products and packagings on global warming. Also second hand shops and online shops such as Ebay and freecycle are also trying to reduce the amount of packaging and products dispersed around the globe.
  • Repair - You and others should think about whether or not iti is always a good idea to buy a whole new product before trying to repair the previous product.
  • Recyle - Alot of materials are able to be recycled, you can tell whether or not a item that you have purchased can be recycled by the logo on the pacakge. Some of the products that can be recylced are: Card, Paper, Aluminium and glass. There are also some plastics that can be recycled.
  • Rethink - Perhaps it is time for a radical reappraisal of the way we buy and dispose of products.
The six 'R's are;
Reduse
Refuse
Re-use
Repair
Recylce
Rethink

Rebrand of Company Logo

In this Product design Post i am going to be redesigning a major company logo. The company i am going to be redesigning the Adidas Logo.

Adidas was created in the year 1924 and was properly registered in 1949 by Adolf Dassler. Adidas sponsers and supports many sports like Golf, Football, Tennis, and many other sports. The main item of clothing that they specialise in is foot wear in sports but also create many other items of clothing such as Sun Glasses, Head wear, Clima Cool (shirts), Trousers and obviously shoes. Adidas in many sports buy out different companys who create things for the sport, for example ; Adidas have recently brought a company called Taylormade which is one of the biggest golf club making brand in the world. Of course like many major sports brands they have rivals, One of their biggest rivals would have to be Nike, Who compete with in possibly every sport.

Logo

The three stipes of the adidas logo was created in 1951 and was designed by a finnish company Karhu Sports. My ideas for the Redisigning of the Adidas logo is that i am going to keep the original three stripes but try to manipulate it in away to make it possibly more groovy or keep it looking professional and redisign it to make it look more modern. By doing this i may have to make it look more clear. The way i am going to include the three stripes is possibly by including it in the name or striking through it hopefully making it all in all better and maybe more eye catching.
